Using Ancient Egyptian wisdom in modern day life

Many thousands of years ago, in the heart of Egypt, the Ancient Egyptians built a civilization rooted in the belief that the physical and spiritual worlds were inseparable. It’s often referred to as Sema-Tawy, the binding of the two Lands, representing the unification of Upper (lotus) and Lower Egypt (papyrus), between the physical and non-physical. They didn’t just practice religion; they lived a philosophy of cosmic integration.

Today, for many of us this philosophy has become blurred. We desperately try to navigate a fragmented digital age and constantly try to find peace and balance in a world where we are confronted with the relentless onslaught of nasty global politics, wars, famine and intrusive unaltered content. It’s at these times when leaning on these ancient principles offer a surprisingly practical path for a balanced life. It’s not easy, but nothing worth doing ever is.

Transformation is essential. The Egyptians were obsessed with the idea of the Kheper, the scarab beetle representing transformation and becoming. They believed life was a series of initiations. Embracing the shadow and evolving. Registering that we all have a dark and somewhat unpleasant part of ourselves, but we must turn up every day and continuously evolve through different practices and rituals. From the way you prepare your tea to the way you shut down your laptop, adding a ritual that transforms an activity into a sacred act. Waking up and staying in stillness, avoiding your phone and using the first 30 minutes to simply feel grateful. Touching nature, smelling food, and looking into your loved ones eyes. Ritual can transform even the most mundane into pure calmness.

At the heart of Egyptian society was the concept of Ma’at, the principle of truth, balance, order, and harmony. To the Ancient Egyptians, Ma’at was the connection between all living things, what kept the world moving in peace, without chaos.  In a modern context, Ma’at is a path we can take through all decisions, actions and interactions that make us feel at peace. This could mean being nice to the person who is always mean to you at work, not reacting to drivers that want to cut in front of you on the road or not getting frustrated with your partner, even though they are doing something frustrating. The energy we put out comes back to us. While we often view balance as a static 50/50 split and that we should not give more of ourself, it is never the case. In order to bring abundance, order and harmony we must first act in this way. The Egyptians saw it as a dynamic equilibrium. Like the Ancient Egyptians, life as we know it should be treated the same. We will never have full balance, if we are not radiating this in everything we do.
